Markets Await Warsh's Jackson Hole Debut as Yields Stay Elevated
Warsh's Jackson Hole Keynote Takes Center Stage
All eyes are on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh as he prepares to deliver his first Jackson Hole keynote at 10:00 a.m. ET, with markets searching for clarity on the policy path ahead. Warsh inherited a hawkish reputation from his earlier tenure as a Fed governor and years spent as a vocal critic of the institution he now leads. The speech arrives with inflation running at roughly 3.4 percent—well above the Fed's 2 percent target—and the federal funds rate held steady at 3.5 to 3.75 percent after two consecutive meetings with no change. A 9-to-3 FOMC dissent vote at the last meeting and September rate-hike odds stuck near one-in-three suggest markets have already priced in a neutral-to-hawkish stance, but traders are looking for any signal on whether the chair favors further tightening or extended patience.
Nvidia Lifts Sentiment but Chip Sector Splits
Nvidia reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $96.22 billion and adjusted earnings of $2.22 per share after Wednesday's close, comfortably beating Street estimates of $2.10 per share, and CEO Jensen Huang forecast roughly 70 percent revenue growth for fiscal 2028. The results powered the Nasdaq higher on Thursday and lifted broad sentiment across the technology sector. However, premarket trading on Friday told a more uneven story: Nasdaq-100 futures slipped 0.32 percent as Marvell and Rubrik each fell more than 7 percent before the bell, highlighting a widening performance gap among semiconductor and cloud-infrastructure names even as AI spending continues to accelerate.
Cybersecurity Stocks Surge on Agentic AI Demand
Within the cybersecurity sector, Okta soared more than 28 percent and CrowdStrike gained 20.5 percent this week after both companies surpassed analyst expectations and raised their guidance, citing booming demand tied to the rise of agentic AI workloads. Palo Alto Networks rallied alongside them, popping sharply on the same thematic tailwind. The moves underscore how AI-driven security requirements are creating a distinct pocket of earnings strength, even as other technology subsectors face more mixed results.
Treasury Yields Remain Near Multi-Year Highs
The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield hovered around 5.25 percent—its highest level since 2007—while the 10-year note sat near 4.68 percent and the 2-year at roughly 4.24 percent. Yields briefly retreated earlier in the week after the Treasury Department announced an expansion of its debt buyback program, but the decline was swiftly reversed, with the 30-year climbing more than 5 basis points in a single session. Falling oil prices provided some relief on inflation expectations, yet persistent above-target inflation and heavy government borrowing needs continue to weigh on the long end of the curve, keeping mortgage and corporate borrowing costs elevated.
Global Growth Outlook Shows Resilience Amid Policy Divergence
S&P Global's August update noted that the global economy is showing resilience, with second-quarter growth rates generally surprising to the upside, particularly in Western economies. Monetary policy paths remain divergent: Brazil's central bank cut its Selic rate to 14.0 percent in its fourth consecutive quarter-point reduction, while half of the Fed committee now expects a rate rise before year-end. European futures edged modestly higher ahead of the Friday session, and Asian markets delivered a mixed performance as Samsung and SK Hynix extended losses while the Hang Seng held above its opening range.
